On July 15, 2025, the Judicial Yuan and the Taiwan Constitutional Court (TCC) welcomed the visit of Assistant Professor Dian Shah and Research Associate Ratu Nafisah from the Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) at the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law (NUS Law). On behalf of the Judicial Yuan and the TCC, Acting President & Chief Justice Prof. Dr. Ming-Yan SHIEH expressed sincere welcome to the scholars upon their meeting, which was accompanied by Justice Po-Hsiang YU, Director-General of the TCC Hao-Ching YANG, and Research Judge Yi-Yi LEE (translator of this meeting).

Their meeting commenced with the two parties introducing their respective institutions and missions. Assistant Professor Shah, who is also the Deputy Director of CALS and the Co-Convenor of the Law and Religion research cluster, gave a brief introduction on CALS’s research. The CALS is currently conducting empirical studies on the relationships between court decisions and social cohesion, specifically examining how constitutional court or supreme court judges in East/South Asia decide on major cases that could have a significant influence on society. As judges from different jurisdictions provide invaluable materials for comparative legal studies, CLAS hopes to act as a hub for transnational exchanges. Assistant Professor Dian Shah also emphasized that, through events held by CALS, she looks forward to inviting officials from the Judicial Yuan and the TCC to join in future dialogues between East/South-Asian judges and international academics.

During the meeting, Chief Justice SHIEH and Justice YU also shared their experiences in constitutional adjudication and how they consider pluralistic viewpoints in their decisions. Chief Justice concluded the meeting by commending NUS’s effort in facilitating interactions between Asian courts. He wishes CALS yields fruitful results in its studies.
